My painting is oil and acrylic on canvas. My painting was inspired by George Floyd’s death. His death occurred close to Father’s Day. When the media coverage began showing images of his young daughter, I began to think about what would happen to her. I have a daughter around the same age and I also lost my mother this year. So, I just couldn’t imagine what it would be like as a young child to lose a parent the way Gianna Floyd did. It hurts. She lost her father in a very public and disturbing manner. Emotionally, I wanted to try to understand that by asking myself the following: What will happen to her once the media cycle surrounding her father’s death has passed? Who will she become when she’s 18? What can we do to help those who are left in the wake of these types of incidents? How do we heal the hearts and not just issue payouts through civil suits? Are we really thinking about what happens to those families and loved ones in the wake of brutal experiences with the police?
